What Is an SCSS Calculator?

An SCSS calculator shows the quarterly interest payout and total returns from a Senior Citizen Savings Scheme deposit, based on your investment amount and the current government-notified interest rate.

SCSS is one of the highest-paying government-backed schemes available to eligible investors, and the calculator helps you see exactly how much quarterly income to expect before you commit your funds.

Current SCSS Details

  • Interest rate: 8.2% per annum, paid quarterly and reviewed each quarter by the Finance Ministry.
  • Eligibility: individuals aged 60 and above. Retired civilian employees aged 55 to 60 can invest within 1 month of receiving retirement benefits, and retired defence personnel are eligible from age 50.
  • Investment limit: minimum ₹1,000, maximum ₹30 lakh across all SCSS accounts held by an individual.
  • Tenure: 5 years, extendable once by an additional 3 years.
  • Tax treatment: the principal qualifies for a Section 80C deduction up to ₹1.5 lakh under the old regime. Interest is fully taxable, and TDS applies if annual interest exceeds ₹1 lakh for senior citizens.

How the Quarterly Payout Is Calculated

SCSS pays simple interest every quarter on your original deposit, so the formula is direct:

Quarterly payout = (Principal × Annual interest rate) ÷ 4

Interest is credited on the first working day of April, July, October and January, and never compounds inside the account.

Worked Example

An investment of ₹30,00,000, the maximum limit, at 8.2% per annum:

Quarterly payout = (₹30,00,000 × 8.2%) ÷ 4 = ₹61,500 per quarter

That is ₹2,46,000 a year. Over the 5-year tenure it adds up to ₹12,30,000 in total interest, on top of the full ₹30,00,000 principal returned at maturity or on extension.
