What Is a Personal Loan EMI Calculator?

A personal loan EMI calculator shows you the fixed monthly instalment you will pay on a personal loan, based on the loan amount, interest rate, and repayment tenure. It also shows the total interest you will pay over the life of the loan.

Since personal loans are unsecured, with no collateral required, lenders price them higher than secured loans like a home loan or loan against property. That makes checking the real EMI and total cost especially important before signing up.

The EMI Formula

EMI = [P × R × (1+R)ⁿ] ÷ [(1+R)ⁿ − 1]

P is the principal loan amount, R is the monthly interest rate (annual rate divided by 12), and N is the total number of monthly instalments.

Worked Example

A ₹5,00,000 personal loan at 13% per annum for 3 years, or 36 months:

  • Monthly interest rate: 13% ÷ 12 = 1.083%
  • EMI works out to approximately ₹16,847 per month
  • Total payment over 3 years: approximately ₹6,06,500
  • Total interest paid: approximately ₹1,06,500

The Processing Fee Changes the Real Rate

Most personal loan calculators stop at the EMI. But lenders deduct the processing fee, plus 18% GST on it, from the amount they disburse rather than adding it to the loan. You repay EMIs on the full sanctioned amount while receiving less than that in your account.

That gap makes the effective annual rate higher than the headline rate. On the example above with a 2% processing fee, a 13% headline rate is closer to 14.5% on the money that actually reaches you. This calculator solves for that number.

Net disbursal = P − fee × 1.18
Effective APR = 12 × the monthly rate that makes the EMI on the net disbursal equal your actual EMI

Typical Personal Loan Interest Rates in India

Personal loan interest rates generally range from about 10.5% to 24% per annum, depending on your credit score, income, existing obligations, employer category, and the lender. Banks typically offer lower rates than NBFCs and fintech lenders, but eligibility criteria are usually stricter.

A credit score above 750 generally qualifies for the better end of a lender’s rate range, while a lower score, or a first-time borrower with no credit history, usually gets quoted the higher end.

Reducing Your Personal Loan EMI

  • Longer tenure lowers the EMI but increases total interest paid, since you pay interest for more months.
  • A higher credit score can get you a lower interest rate quote from the same lender.
  • Prepayment, where allowed, reduces the outstanding principal and future interest, though many lenders charge a foreclosure fee on personal loans.

Key Takeaways

  • A personal loan EMI calculator uses loan amount, interest rate, and tenure to compute your fixed monthly payment and total interest cost.
  • Personal loan rates typically range from 10.5% to 24% per annum in India, higher than secured loans since there is no collateral.
  • The processing fee is deducted from disbursal, so the effective rate on the money you receive is higher than the rate quoted.
  • Always check for prepayment or foreclosure charges before signing, since these affect the real cost of paying off the loan early.

FAQs

Most lenders reserve their lowest rates for borrowers with a credit score of 750 or above, along with stable income and a low existing debt burden.
