What Is a Post Office MIS Calculator?

A Post Office MIS calculator shows the fixed monthly income you will receive from a Post Office Monthly Income Scheme deposit, based on how much you invest and the current interest rate.

MIS is a favourite among retirees and conservative investors who want a predictable, government-backed monthly payout without touching their principal until maturity.

Current Post Office MIS Details

  • Interest rate: around 7.4% per annum, paid out monthly. The rate is reviewed quarterly by the Finance Ministry.
  • Tenure: 5 years.
  • Maximum investment: ₹9 lakh for a single account, ₹15 lakh for a joint account.
  • Minimum investment: ₹1,000, in multiples of ₹1,000.
  • Premature withdrawal: allowed after 1 year, with a deduction from the principal of 2% before 3 years and 1% between 3 and 5 years.

How the Monthly Payout Is Calculated

Unlike a compounding instrument, MIS pays simple interest every month, calculated on your original deposit, which never changes during the tenure:

Monthly income = (Principal × Annual interest rate) ÷ 12

There is no compounding inside an MIS account. A calculator that compounds is simply wrong for this scheme.

Worked Example

A single account with the maximum ₹9,00,000 deposit at 7.4% per annum:

Monthly income = (₹9,00,000 × 7.4%) ÷ 12 = ₹5,550 per month

Over the 5-year tenure this adds up to ₹3,33,000 in total interest, on top of getting back your full ₹9,00,000 principal at maturity. A joint account at the ₹15,00,000 maximum pays ₹9,250 a month on the same basis.

Key Takeaways

  • The current rate is around 7.4% per annum, reviewed quarterly, with a ₹9 lakh single and ₹15 lakh joint investment cap.
  • Interest is paid out monthly and never compounds within the account, since your principal does not grow during the tenure.
  • MIS interest is fully taxable as income, though there is no TDS deducted by the post office itself.

FAQs

Yes, the entire monthly interest is taxable as income at your slab rate. The post office does not deduct TDS, but you are still required to declare and pay tax on it.
