What Is a Credit Card EMI Calculator?

A credit card EMI calculator shows the actual monthly instalment and total cost when you convert a credit card purchase into EMI, including interest, GST and processing fees, so you can compare it against simply paying the full amount or using another financing option.

GST Is the Whole Story

The single most common question about credit card EMI is whether GST applies to the purchase. It does not. GST at 18% applies to the interest and to the processing fee, never to the principal amount of your purchase.

It is also billed month by month, on that month’s interest component, so the real outflow declines over the tenure. Calculators that dump the entire GST into the first EMI overstate your early payments.

Total cost = P + Interest × 1.18 + Fee × 1.18

Reducing Balance vs Flat Rate

Bank card EMI is almost always on a reducing balance, where interest is charged only on what you still owe. Merchant and buy-now-pay-later EMI is often quoted flat, where interest is charged on the full purchase amount for the entire tenure.

The difference is large. A 13% flat rate is roughly a 23% reducing-balance rate for the same instalment. This calculator lets you switch between the two and shows the effective APR so you can compare like with like.

Reducing: EMI = P × i × (1+i)ⁿ ÷ [(1+i)ⁿ − 1]
Flat: EMI = [P + P × r × n ÷ 12] ÷ n

Worked Example

A ₹60,000 purchase converted to a 12-month EMI at 15% per annum, with a ₹1,200 processing fee:

  • Base EMI: approximately ₹5,415 per month
  • Total interest over the year: approximately ₹5,000
  • GST on the interest at 18%: approximately ₹900
  • Processing fee plus its GST: ₹1,416
  • Total cost over the sticker price: approximately ₹7,300 on a ₹60,000 purchase

What "No-Cost EMI" Actually Means

No-cost EMI offers are not interest-free. The interest cost is typically built into the product price upfront, as a discount that is forfeited if you choose EMI, or absorbed by the merchant as a promotional cost.

Crucially, the GST on that interest and the processing fee with its own GST are not waived. On the example above, a no-cost EMI still costs you around ₹2,300. The calculator shows this figure separately.

Key Takeaways

  • A credit card EMI calculator should include GST and the processing fee, not just the interest, to show the true total cost.
  • GST at 18% applies to interest and fees only, never to the purchase amount itself.
  • A flat rate is roughly half the true reducing-balance rate, so always compare the effective APR.
  • No-cost EMI offers still leave you paying GST on the interest plus the processing fee and its GST.

FAQs

It depends on the specific rates and fees offered at the time. For smaller amounts and shorter tenures, credit card EMI can be competitive, but compare the total cost including GST and fees rather than the headline interest rate.
