Overview
The All Equity Mutual Funds page helps investors compare different ways of investing in the stock market through mutual funds.
Equity categories differ by company size, diversification, investing style, sector exposure, theme, and portfolio strategy.
Choosing the right category should come before choosing the individual scheme.
Explained
The equity section includes categories such as:
Each has a different portfolio mandate and risk profile.
Explained
Market-cap categories determine the size of companies a fund primarily invests in.
Style categories such as Value and Contra determine how managers identify opportunities.
Sectoral and thematic funds concentrate on specific economic areas.
Passive Index Funds seek to track specified benchmarks rather than outperform them through active stock selection.
Specialised long-short products can operate under the separate SIF framework and should not be treated as ordinary equity mutual funds.
Suitability
Equity funds may suit investors who:
The specific category still matters.
A Large Cap Fund and a Small Cap Fund should not be assumed to carry the same level of volatility.
Advantages
Investors can compare large, mid, and small-company strategies.
Value, contra, focused, flexi-cap, and multi-cap funds follow different approaches.
Sectoral and thematic categories make it easier to see where a portfolio may become concentrated.
Investors can consider actively managed funds alongside relevant index strategies.
Before you invest
Mid and small companies can be more volatile than larger established companies.
Sectoral funds can decline sharply when their chosen industry falls out of favour.
Owning multiple equity funds can result in repeated exposure to the same stocks.
Strong historical growth does not make a fund or market segment attractive at every valuation.
Compare expenses within the same equity category.
Equity should generally be used for goals with enough time to tolerate significant market fluctuations.
Taxation
Where a scheme qualifies as an equity-oriented mutual fund under applicable Indian tax law, qualifying units held for more than 12 months generally fall under long-term capital-gains rules.
Section 112A LTCG is generally taxed at 12.5% above the applicable annual exemption threshold.
Qualifying units held for 12 months or less generally fall under the applicable Section 111A short-term capital-gains rules.
International, FoF, commodity, or specialised structures displayed alongside equity products can have different tax treatment.
Step by step
Good to know
There is no universally best category. The appropriate choice depends on risk tolerance, investment horizon, and portfolio needs.
Not inherently. Small-cap companies can offer growth potential but generally bring additional volatility and liquidity risk.
Flexi Cap Funds have greater freedom to allocate across company sizes, while Multi Cap Funds follow prescribed minimum allocations across large, mid, and small-cap segments.
They can hold multiple stocks but remain concentrated around one sector or theme.
Only when each has a clear portfolio role. Too many funds can create unnecessary overlap.
Yes. Equity returns are market-linked and can be negative.
