Frequently Asked Questions
MCX (Multi Commodity Exchange of India) offers futures and options on energy (crude oil, natural gas), bullion (gold, silver) and base metals (copper, aluminium, zinc, lead, nickel), among others. Each commodity trades through contracts with fixed lot sizes and expiry dates.
Energy, bullion and base metals trade from 9:00 AM to 11:30 PM on weekdays. During US winter, when daylight saving is off, the session extends to 11:55 PM because these contracts track international markets.
Prices show the latest traded price of the near-month MCX futures contract. They move with global prices, the rupee-dollar exchange rate, and domestic demand and supply. The timestamp tells you when prices were last updated.
You don’t need a new demat account. You do need to activate the commodity segment on your trading account, which usually requires income proof because commodity trading involves leverage.
A futures contract obliges you to buy or sell the commodity at a set price on expiry. An option gives you the right, but not the obligation, to do so. Options buyers pay a premium, and their maximum loss is limited to that premium.
Margin is the amount you deposit to take a futures position worth much more than that deposit. This leverage magnifies both gains and losses, so even small price moves can significantly affect your capital.
