Overview

The Bima Yojana for artisans is a Government of India initiative implemented through the Office of the Development Commissioner for Handicrafts. It provides direct insurance coverage to registered handicraft artisans, ensuring they and their families are protected against life, accident, and health-related risks.

The scheme aims to provide social security to the millions of artisans working in India’s unorganized handicraft sector. By offering insurance directly to artisans, it reduces their financial vulnerability and helps sustain the craft ecosystem.

Eligibility

• Age typically between 18 and 60 years at the time of enrollment
• Engaged in traditional or contemporary handicraft production

Exclusions

• Artisans not registered under the Handicrafts Ministry’s artisan database
• Claims arising from self-inflicted harm or criminal activity
• Artisans already covered under equivalent insurance through other central schemes

Application Process

1. Register with the nearest Craft Resource Centre or Development Commissioner’s regional office
2. Obtain an artisan identity card
3. Enrollment into Bima Yojana is processed by the office upon registration
4. For claims, submit the claim form with relevant documents to the regional office
5. Claims are forwarded to the insurance provider for disbursement
