Post-Market Trading Session in India: 3:40–4:00 PM Explained

India’s Post-Market Closing Session
NSE/BSE operate a Closing Session from 3:40 PM to 4:00 PM after normal trading ends at 3:30 PM. During this 20-minute window, only market orders at the closing price are accepted. This session was introduced to allow investors to buy or sell at the official closing price — useful for investors tracking benchmarks or managing VWAP performance.
| Time | Event |
|---|---|
| 3:30 PM | Normal trading ends |
| 3:30 – 3:40 PM | Calculation of closing price (weighted average of last 30 minutes) |
| 3:40 – 4:00 PM | Closing session: market orders only, execute at closing price |
| 4:00 PM onwards | Post-close data processing; next-day preparations |
Why the Closing Session Exists
- Institutional investors track VWAP/closing benchmarks — this session helps them match the index close
- Retail investors who missed the trading window can still transact at closing price
- Reduces market-on-close price manipulation by spreading execution over 30-minute average
Limitations of the Closing Session
- Only market orders — you cannot specify a price
- Very limited liquidity in most stocks during this session
- Not available for derivatives (F&O) — equity cash segment only
After-Market Orders (AMO): The Better Alternative
AMO (After-Market Orders) are orders placed after market hours (typically 3:45 PM to 8:59 AM next day, depending on broker). These are queued and sent to the exchange at market open the next day (9:00 AM pre-open or 9:15 AM normal open). AMO allows you to plan and place trades in the evening without needing to be at your screen during market hours.
| Feature | Closing Session (3:40 PM) | AMO (Post-Market) |
|---|---|---|
| Execution time | Same day at close | Next trading day at open |
| Order type | Market only | Limit, market, SL, etc. |
| Price control | None (closing price) | Full control with limit orders |
| Best for | Urgent same-day fills | Next-day strategic entry/exit |
