After-Market Orders (AMO) in India: How to Trade at Night and Execute at Open

What is an After-Market Order?
An After-Market Order (AMO) is an order placed outside of market hours (after 3:30 PM or before 9:00 AM) that gets executed during the next market session. For retail investors who cannot monitor the market during trading hours, AMO is the most practical way to act on investment decisions made in the evening.
AMO Timing at Lemonn
| Order Type | AMO Placement Window | Execution Time |
|---|---|---|
| Equity Delivery (CNC) | 3:45 PM – 8:59 AM | 9:00 AM pre-open or 9:15 AM normal session |
| Equity Intraday (MIS) | 3:45 PM – 8:59 AM | 9:15 AM normal session |
| F&O (Futures) | 3:45 PM – 8:59 AM | 9:15 AM (no pre-open for F&O) |
| Mutual Fund (SIP or lump) | Any time | Next NAV cut-off (1:30 PM for equity funds) |
Order Types Available for AMO
- Limit order: Specify exact price — execute only if market reaches that price at open
- Market order: Execute at best available price at open — risky if news moves stock sharply
- Stop-loss limit: Combine stop trigger with limit execution — good for risk management
Use Cases for AMO
Reacting to Post-Market News
Company announces quarterly results after 4 PM. You read the results, assess them as positive, and place an AMO limit buy for the next morning. You wake up — either your order was filled at your price, or the gap-up was too large and it wasn’t filled. No need to be at your screen at 9:15 AM.
Pre-Planned Weekly Entries
On Sunday evening, review your watchlist and set AMO limit orders for the week. This systematic approach — deciding entry prices without market noise — is aligned with good investment discipline.
Risks of AMO
- Gap-up/gap-down: Stock can open far from your AMO price — limit order may not fill; market order may fill at a bad price
- News between AMO and execution: A negative development overnight can make your buy AMO outdated — you cannot cancel it during pre-market unless you log in
- Solution: Set limit orders with realistic gap assumptions; always have stop-loss in place after fill
