Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana
Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) is a scheme launched by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas in 2016 to provide free LPG connections to women from below poverty line (BPL) households. The scheme aims to replace traditional cooking fuels like wood, coal, and cow dung with clean cooking gas, improving health and environmental outcomes for rural families.
What Is PMUY?
PMUY provides a free LPG connection to women of BPL households who did not previously have one. The initial phase targeted 5 crore connections. Ujjwala 2.0, launched in 2021, expanded the scheme to 1 crore more beneficiaries, including migrants and those from underprivileged communities not covered under BPL.
The scheme provides:
– Free LPG connection (the cylinder, regulator, and pressure regulator)
– Security deposit waiver
– First refill and hotplate provided free of charge under Ujjwala 2.0
Who Is Eligible?
Beneficiaries must:
– Be adult women
– Belong to BPL households (identified through SECC 2011 data or specific social categories)
– Not have an existing LPG connection in the household
– Have a bank account
Priority is given to SC/ST households, beneficiaries of PMAY, AAY, forest dwellers, most backward classes, river islands, and tea garden workers.
How to Apply
Eligible women can apply at the nearest LPG distributor by submitting:
– Aadhaar card
– BPL ration card or equivalent document
– Bank account details
– Self-declaration about the household not having an existing connection
Impact of PMUY
Before PMUY, indoor air pollution from solid fuels was a major health issue, particularly affecting women and children who spent more time near cooking fires. PMUY has significantly increased LPG penetration in rural India, reducing health risks and improving the quality of life for millions of families.
Practical Example
Kamla, a woman from a BPL family in a village in Madhya Pradesh, received a free LPG connection under PMUY in 2017. Before this, she cooked on wood fire, which caused respiratory problems for her and her children. With the LPG connection, she cooks faster and in a healthier environment. She pays only for refill cylinders, which are subsidised under government schemes.
