National Education Policy 2020

The National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) is a comprehensive framework for transforming India’s education system at all levels, from early childhood to higher education. It is the third national education policy in India’s history (after 1968 and 1986) and introduces significant structural, pedagogical, and governance reforms.

What Is NEP 2020?

NEP 2020 was approved by the Union Cabinet in July 2020. It sets the vision and direction for India’s education system through 2040, with recommendations for:

– School education (from foundational to secondary level)
– Higher education (undergraduate, postgraduate, and research)
– Skill development
– Digital education and technology integration

Key Reforms in School Education

**New 5+3+3+4 Structure:**
NEP 2020 replaces the old 10+2 structure with:
– 5 years of Foundational Stage (3 years of pre-school + Classes 1 and 2)
– 3 years of Preparatory Stage (Classes 3, 4, 5)
– 3 years of Middle Stage (Classes 6, 7, 8)
– 4 years of Secondary Stage (Classes 9, 10, 11, 12)

**Mother Tongue/Regional Language:**
Instruction in mother tongue or regional language up to at least Class 5 (preferably Class 8).

**No rigid stream separation:**
Students can take subjects across science, arts, and commerce streams at Class 11 and 12.

**Coding from Class 6:**
Vocational and coding education integrated from Class 6 onward.

Key Reforms in Higher Education

– **Multidisciplinary universities**: moves away from single-discipline universities toward broad-based universities
– **Multiple entry and exit**: students can exit after 1 year (certificate), 2 years (diploma), 3 years (degree), or 4 years (degree with research)
– **Academic Bank of Credits (ABC)**: students can accumulate credits across institutions over time
– **Target of 50% Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in higher education by 2035** (from around 27% in 2020)

Practical Example

Arjun, who wanted to study history and computer science, was forced to choose between arts and science streams under the old system. Under NEP 2020 implementation, his school allows him to take history, sociology, computer science, and mathematics together. In college, he can take a 4-year degree and exit after 2 years with a diploma if circumstances require, continuing later with credit transfer.

Key Takeaways
