Income Tax Refunds 2026: How to Check ITR Status Online

Income tax refunds for Assessment Year (AY) 2026-27 have started reaching the bank accounts of some taxpayers. The Income Tax Department’s own portal has highlighted taxpayer reports of returns being processed and refunds being credited, in some cases within a few days.

However, receiving a refund quickly is not guaranteed. Your return must first be verified and processed, and your bank account and tax details need to be in order. The Income Tax Department says refunds usually take around four to five weeks after e-verification, although actual timelines can vary.

Here is how to check your income tax refund status, understand what different statuses mean, and fix common problems if your refund has not arrived.

Why are income tax refunds being credited?

An income tax refund arises when the tax you paid during the financial year is higher than your final tax liability.

This excess payment could come from:

  • Tax Deducted at Source (TDS)
  • Tax Collected at Source (TCS)
  • Advance tax
  • Self-assessment tax
  • Other eligible tax credits

After your Income Tax Return (ITR) is filed and e-verified, the Income Tax Department processes it. If the department determines that you paid more tax than required, a refund is generated.

For AY 2026-27, some taxpayers have already reported receiving refunds. The Income Tax Department’s portal featured taxpayer feedback in August 2026 mentioning refunds arriving within one or two days in some cases, and even faster in isolated instances. These reports should not be treated as a standard processing timeline for every taxpayer.

How to check your income tax refund status online

The simplest way to check your ITR refund status is through the official Income Tax e-Filing portal.

“Start investing with confidence! Explore 0 demat account and grow your wealth.”

Step 1: Log in to the e-Filing portal

Visit the official Income Tax e-Filing portal and log in using your PAN and password.

Step 2: Open your filed returns

After logging in, go to:

e-File > Income Tax Returns > View Filed Returns

This page displays the returns you have filed.

Step 3: Choose the relevant assessment year

Select AY 2026-27 if you are checking the return filed for income earned during FY 2025-26.

Step 4: View the return details

Select View Details for the relevant ITR.

You can see the return’s processing lifecycle and whether the refund has been issued, adjusted or failed.

What do different income tax refund statuses mean?

Your refund status tells you where the return currently sits in the processing cycle.

Refund statusWhat it generally means
Return successfully verifiedYour ITR has been verified and can move to processing
Return under processingThe Income Tax Department is still processing your ITR
Refund issuedThe refund has been approved and sent for payment
Refund partially adjustedPart of your refund has been adjusted, such as against an outstanding demand
Refund fully adjustedThe refund amount has been completely adjusted
Refund failedThe refund could not be credited, commonly because of bank or PAN-related issues

If the status indicates that action is required, check the details and any communication sent by the Income Tax Department before making changes.

How long does an income tax refund take?

The Income Tax Department says refund processing starts only after the ITR has been e-verified. According to its refund-status guidance, a refund usually takes around four to five weeks to reach the taxpayer’s account.

That is a general timeline, not a promise.

Some AY 2026-27 taxpayers have reported much faster processing, but your refund could take longer depending on factors such as:

  • When you filed and verified your return
  • Whether the ITR contains discrepancies
  • Whether tax information matches departmental records
  • Whether your bank account is eligible and correctly validated
  • Whether there is an outstanding tax demand
  • Whether the department requires additional verification

So, another taxpayer receiving a refund before you does not necessarily mean there is a problem with your return.

Why has your income tax refund not been credited?

A delayed refund can have several explanations.

1. Your ITR has not been e-verified

Filing the return alone does not complete the process. The Income Tax Department states that refund processing begins only after e-verification.

Check whether your ITR shows as successfully verified.

2. Your return is still being processed

Even if you filed and verified your return early, processing times can differ between taxpayers.

A straightforward salaried taxpayer’s return, for example, may be processed differently from a return containing multiple income sources, capital gains, foreign assets or other details requiring additional checks.

3. Your bank account is not pre-validated

Bank-account problems are among the common reasons a refund may fail.

The Income Tax Department requires the bank account receiving the refund to be pre-validated. Its e-Filing portal allows taxpayers to add, pre-validate and nominate an eligible bank account for receiving refunds.

4. Your bank details do not match

According to the Income Tax Department, refund failures can occur because of:

  • A bank account that has not been pre-validated
  • A name mismatch between bank and PAN details
  • An invalid IFSC
  • A closed bank account

Check these details carefully before requesting a refund reissue.

5. Your PAN is inoperative

This is particularly important.

If your PAN is inoperative because it has not been linked with Aadhaar where required, your refund can be put on hold. The Income Tax Department issued communications in August 2026 specifically warning taxpayers that refunds may be held under Section 139AA(2) when PAN is inoperative due to non-linking with Aadhaar.

In such a case, you may need to complete PAN-Aadhaar linking and follow the applicable refund reissue process.

6. There is a discrepancy in your return

Differences between the information reported in your ITR and data available to the tax department can slow processing.

For instance, discrepancies involving TDS, income reported through AIS or other tax information may require further processing or action from you.

Check your registered email address and the e-Filing portal for any communication from the department.

What should you do if the refund status says “Refund Failed”?

A “Refund Failed” status means the department attempted to issue the refund, but the money could not be successfully credited.

First, check your bank-account details on the e-Filing portal.

Make sure:

  1. The account number is correct.
  2. The IFSC is valid.
  3. The account is active.
  4. The account is eligible for receiving a tax refund.
  5. The bank account has been successfully pre-validated.
  6. Your PAN and bank details match.

The Income Tax Department notes that savings, current, cash credit, overdraft and NRO accounts can be pre-validated for refunds. Other account types, such as PPF accounts, cannot be used for this purpose.

Once the underlying issue has been corrected, follow the refund reissue option available through the e-Filing portal, where applicable.

How can you check whether your bank account is validated?

Log in to the Income Tax e-Filing portal and open the My Bank Account section.

Here, you can:

  • Add a bank account
  • Check its validation status
  • Revalidate a failed account
  • Remove an inactive or closed account
  • Nominate a validated account for receiving your income tax refund

The Income Tax Department says bank pre-validation is automatic after you submit the request to your bank, but the status may take 10 to 12 working days to update in your e-Filing account.

It is therefore better to check your bank-account status before a refund is issued rather than waiting for a failed transaction.

What if the refund is issued but not showing in your bank account?

If your e-Filing account says “Refund Issued” but the money has not appeared in your bank account, first verify the account details associated with the refund.

Also check:

  • Your bank statement, not just SMS notifications
  • Whether the nominated account is still active
  • Whether your bank account remains validated
  • Any refund-related communication from the Income Tax Department
  • Whether the refund status later changed to “Refund Failed”

If the department’s stated processing period has passed and the refund remains unresolved, use the grievance and support options available through the official e-Filing portal.

Do you get interest on a delayed income tax refund?

In certain cases, yes.

Section 244A of the Income-tax Act provides for interest on eligible income tax refunds, subject to the applicable conditions and calculation rules.

This does not mean every delayed refund automatically earns interest for the entire waiting period. The amount and period for which interest is payable depend on the circumstances of the refund and applicable tax provisions.

The department’s 2026 communication on refunds held because of an inoperative PAN also refers to refund interest under Section 244A.

What should you check while waiting for your ITR refund?

If your refund has not arrived, work through this quick checklist:

  1. Confirm that the ITR was successfully filed.
  2. Check that the return has been e-verified.
  3. See whether the ITR has been processed.
  4. Confirm that a refund has actually been determined.
  5. Check whether your nominated bank account is pre-validated.
  6. Confirm that your PAN is operative and Aadhaar-linked where applicable.
  7. Check for any outstanding demand or refund adjustment.
  8. Review emails and notices from the Income Tax Department.
  9. If the refund failed, correct the issue and use the refund reissue facility where applicable.

Most importantly, use the official e-Filing portal as your primary source of refund information rather than relying on social-media posts or another taxpayer’s processing timeline.
