India Market Outlook – 26 August 2026

Indian benchmarks surrendered early gains as IT, telecom, infrastructure and heavyweight Reliance outweighed strength in banks and metals. The new closing-auction session amplified losses: the Nifty was down about 0.24% before the auction but officially finished 0.52% lower. Breadth was sharply divergent, with 36 of 50 Nifty stocks falling while the Smallcap 100 gained 0.81%.

What Moved the Market
- IT sell-off: The Nifty IT index lost 1.47%. Investors were cautious about potential US visa-related cost pressure and Nvidia’s results, with Infosys and Tech Mahindra among the main benchmark drags.
- Closing-auction volatility: Nifty’s loss deepened from roughly 0.24% before the auction to 0.52% at the official close. This market-mechanics effect should not be mistaken for a uniform late-session deterioration in breadth.
- Financial rotation: Kotak Mahindra Bank, Axis Bank and other lenders supported Bank Nifty. Private and PSU bank indices gained 1.04% and 0.77%, respectively.
- Metal rebound: Nifty Metal rose 1.27%, with gains in JSW Steel, Tata Steel and several mid-cap metal names. The strength was broad rather than dependent on one constituent.
- Falling crude: Brent moved below $87 as Iran and Oman discussed a framework aimed at restoring Strait of Hormuz shipping. Lower oil supported the rupee, banks and India’s inflation outlook, but did not overcome heavyweight selling.
- Broader-market resilience: Small caps gained 0.81% with 60% positive breadth, indicating ongoing stock-specific risk appetite beneath weak headline indices.

Outlook for the Next Trading Session
Base case: Volatile, range-bound trade with continued divergence between banks/metals and IT/consumer stocks. Nifty may initially trade between 24,100 and 24,380, with closing-auction behaviour remaining an important end-of-day risk.
Bullish scenario: A benign Nvidia reaction, softer US yields and Brent remaining below $87 could help Nifty reclaim 24,300–24,380. Sustained trade above 24,400 would expose 24,500–24,550. Bank Nifty would need to clear 58,000–58,125 to extend its relative-strength move.
Bearish scenario: Weak global technology cues or renewed escalation around the Strait of Hormuz could push Nifty below 24,100. That would bring 24,000, followed by 23,900–23,950, into focus. Bank Nifty support lies near 57,600, then 57,300–57,050.
