Overview

The Swatantrata Sainik Samman Pension Scheme is a central government scheme administered by the Ministry of Home Affairs. It honors India’s freedom fighters by providing them and their dependent family members with a monthly pension. The scheme recognizes the sacrifices made by those who were imprisoned or suffered hardships during India’s independence movement.

Objective

The scheme aims to provide financial recognition and lifelong support to freedom fighters who gave up their personal freedom for the nation’s independence. It also extends benefits to their spouses and dependents after the freedom fighter’s death.

Eligibility

  • Must have participated in India’s freedom struggle and suffered imprisonment or deportation
  • Individuals who were interned, detained, or went underground for at least 6 months during the independence movement
  • Spouses and unmarried daughters (or sons in certain cases) of deceased freedom fighters
  • Must be an Indian citizen residing in India
  • Should not be receiving a pension from any state government for the same service

Exclusions

  • Those who have willingly taken the benefit of any amnesty scheme or collaborated with the colonial government are not eligible
  • Persons receiving pension from both central and state governments for the same category of freedom fight participation
  • Descendants beyond the spouse and eligible dependents are not covered for family pension

Application Process

  1. Apply to the Ministry of Home Affairs through the state government
  2. Submit the application form along with documentary evidence of participation in the freedom struggle
  3. The state government verifies the claims and forwards the application to the Ministry of Home Affairs
  4. A central committee reviews the application and grants approval
  5. Pension is disbursed monthly to the beneficiary’s bank account

  • Proof of participation in the freedom struggle (court records, gazette notifications, or sworn affidavits)
  • Imprisonment or detention records if available
  • Identity proof and date of birth certificate
  • Proof of Indian citizenship and residence
  • Bank account details
  • Death certificate of the freedom fighter (for family pension claims)
