The Senior Citizens Savings Scheme (SCSS) is a government-backed savings plan available at Post Offices and authorized banks across India. It is specifically designed for individuals aged 60 and above and offers one of the highest guaranteed interest rates among small savings instruments, with the added security of government backing.

Objective

SCSS provides senior citizens with a safe and predictable regular income after retirement. It offers quarterly interest payouts, making it ideal for retirees who need a steady cash flow to manage household and medical expenses without relying solely on family support.

Eligibility

  • Indian residents aged 60 years and above at the time of account opening
  • Retired government employees aged 55 to 60 on voluntary retirement may apply within 1 month of receiving retirement benefits
  • Retired defense personnel aged 50 years and above may also be eligible under special provisions
  • Joint accounts are allowed with spouse only

Exclusions

  • Non-resident Indians (NRIs) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) are not eligible
  • HUFs, trusts, and corporate bodies cannot invest in SCSS
  • Individuals below the minimum age threshold (unless covered by special retirement rules)

Application Process

  1. Visit a Post Office or authorized bank branch with relevant documents
  2. Fill in the SCSS account opening form at the counter
  3. Submit KYC documents and valid age proof along with the form
  4. Make the initial deposit (minimum Rs. 1,000, maximum Rs. 30 lakh)
  5. Passbook is issued confirming account activation and deposit details

  • Age proof such as Aadhaar card, birth certificate, or senior citizen card
  • Identity and address proof documents
  • Retirement proof for applicants using early eligibility provisions
  • PAN card for tax compliance purposes
  • Passport-sized photographs of the account holder
