Overview
Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) is India’s flagship financial inclusion program launched in August 2014. It ensures that every household has access to basic banking services including a savings account, remittance facilities, insurance, and a debit card.
Objective
PMJDY aims to bring the unbanked population into the formal financial system. It provides access to savings, credit, insurance, and pension in an affordable manner, enabling direct benefit transfers and reducing financial exclusion.
Benefits
- Zero-balance savings account at any bank or post office
- RuPay Debit Card with Rs. 2 lakh accident insurance cover
- Overdraft facility of up to Rs. 10,000 after satisfactory account use
- Rs. 30,000 life insurance cover for eligible account holders
- Direct benefit transfer of government subsidies and welfare payments
Eligibility
- Any Indian citizen aged 10 years and above
- No minimum balance requirement
- One account per household under the basic account category
- Special focus on rural, tribal, and migrant populations
Exclusions
- Accounts cannot be used for commercial transactions as a current account
- Overdraft facility is not available to accounts with irregular usage
- Duplicate accounts in the same name at multiple banks are not permitted
Application Process
- Visit the nearest bank branch, business correspondent, or bank mitra
- Fill in the PMJDY account opening form
- Submit KYC documents and photograph
- Account is opened on the same day in most cases
- RuPay debit card is issued or sent to the registered address
Documents Required
- Aadhaar card (primary KYC document)
- If Aadhaar not available: voter ID, driving license, NREGA job card, or PAN card
- Passport-size photograph
- Mobile number (for transaction alerts)
