Overview
The Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) Accident Insurance Scheme is a component of the centrally sponsored PMMSY implemented in Uttarakhand. It provides accident insurance coverage to registered fishermen and fish farmers, protecting their families against financial loss due to accidental death or disability.
Fishing is a high-risk occupation, and this scheme offers a critical safety net for fishing communities in the hills and freshwater bodies of Uttarakhand.
Objective
The scheme ensures financial security for fishermen’s families in case of fatal or disabling accidents. It makes fishing communities more resilient and encourages greater participation in the sector.
Benefits
- Accident death benefit of up to Rs. 5 lakh
- Permanent total disability cover of up to Rs. 5 lakh
- Partial permanent disability cover up to Rs. 2.5 lakh
- Premium is subsidized by the state and central government
- Beneficiary contribution is minimal or nil
Eligibility
- Must be engaged in fishing or fish farming activities in Uttarakhand
- Age: 18 to 70 years
- Must be registered as a fisherman with the state Fisheries Department
- Must hold a valid fishing license or registration certificate
Exclusions
- Unregistered fishermen or fish farmers
- Deaths or disabilities due to self-harm or non-accidental causes
- Applicants not enrolled in the PMMSY framework
Application Process
- Register with the Uttarakhand State Fisheries Department
- Obtain the PMMSY insurance enrollment form
- Submit details of your fishing activity and identity
- State department processes enrollment and forwards to the insurance provider
- Policy document and insurance card issued to the beneficiary
- Claims are processed through the state Fisheries Department
