NPS Vatsalya Scheme National Pension System for Children

Overview

NPS Vatsalya is a National Pension System (NPS) scheme designed for minors, introduced by the Ministry of Finance. It allows parents or guardians to open an NPS account in a child’s name and make contributions that grow over time, giving the child a head start on retirement savings.

When the child turns 18, the account transitions to a regular NPS account under the subscriber’s name.

Objective

The scheme aims to cultivate a savings and pension culture from an early age. By starting contributions in childhood, it builds a significantly larger retirement corpus than accounts opened later in life, thanks to the power of long-term compounding.

Benefits

  • Early start on pension savings with compound growth over decades
  • Seamless transition to a regular NPS account at age 18
  • Flexible contribution amounts (minimum contribution as per NPS norms)
  • Wide investment choice across equity, corporate bonds, and government securities
  • Low cost structure with minimal fund management charges

Eligibility

  • Minor Indian citizens below the age of 18
  • Account to be opened and managed by a parent or legal guardian
  • Parent or guardian must be NPS-compliant with valid KYC
  • Account can be opened through banks, post offices, or online via NPS portals

Exclusions

  • NRIs and OCIs are generally not eligible under this scheme category
  • Contributions cannot be made to an NPS Vatsalya account after the child turns 18
  • Partial withdrawal rules during the minor years are strictly governed
  • The account cannot be held jointly with the guardian
