Overview
The Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension Scheme (IGNWPS) is a centrally sponsored scheme implemented in Sikkim for widows living below the poverty line (BPL). It provides a monthly pension to help them meet their basic living expenses.
The scheme is part of the National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP) and the pension is transferred directly to beneficiaries through the DBT mechanism.
Objective
The scheme aims to provide financial stability to widows who are in poverty and lack economic support. It ensures that these women can live with a basic level of dignity without depending entirely on others.
Benefits
- Monthly pension of Rs 300 per month from the central government
- State government may add a top-up amount
- Funds transferred directly to the bank account through DBT
- Covers widows who have no other source of income
Eligibility
- Must be a widow (husband deceased)
- Must be between 40 and 79 years of age
- Must belong to a Below Poverty Line (BPL) household
- Must be a resident of Sikkim
Exclusions
- Widows above 80 years are covered under the Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme instead
- Women who have remarried are not eligible
- Beneficiaries already receiving pension under other NSAP schemes cannot apply
- Residents of other states are not eligible under Sikkim’s implementation
Application Process
- Visit the Social Welfare Department or local Gram Panchayat office
- Obtain and fill the application form
- Submit form with required documents at the block or district level office
- Authorities will verify BPL status and other details
- Upon approval, pension is credited monthly to the bank account

- Death certificate of husband
- Age proof (Aadhaar card, voter ID, or birth certificate)
- Aadhaar card of applicant
- Residency certificate of Sikkim
