Overview
The Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme (IGNOAPS) is a central government scheme under the National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP). It provides monthly pension support to senior citizens belonging to Below Poverty Line (BPL) households, ensuring a basic income in their old age.
Objective
The scheme aims to provide financial security and social protection to elderly persons who are poor and have limited or no regular income. It is part of India’s broader commitment to the welfare of vulnerable senior citizens.
Benefits
- Monthly pension of Rs. 200 for beneficiaries aged 60 to 79 years
- Monthly pension of Rs. 500 for beneficiaries aged 80 years and above
- State governments may add additional top-up amounts
- Pension is transferred directly to the beneficiary’s bank account
Eligibility
- Applicant must be 60 years of age or above
- Must belong to a BPL household as per the state government’s BPL list
- Must be an Indian citizen
- Should have little or no regular income or financial support
Exclusions
- Persons not listed in the BPL household database are not eligible
- Those already receiving pension from other central or state government schemes may not receive duplicate benefits
- Applicants below 60 years of age are not covered
- Non-citizens and foreign nationals are excluded
Application Process
- Contact the local Gram Panchayat, municipal office, or block development office
- Obtain and fill out the IGNOAPS application form
- Submit the form along with required documents
- The application is verified and included in the state beneficiary list
- Pension is credited monthly to the beneficiary’s bank account or post office account
