Overview

The Dr Ambedkar Central Sector Scheme of Interest Subsidy on Educational Loans for Overseas Studies is a central government scheme under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. It provides full interest subsidy on education loans taken by OBC and EBC students studying abroad during the moratorium period.

This scheme ensures that students from Other Backward Classes and Economically Backward Classes can pursue foreign education without the pressure of accumulating interest.

Objective

The scheme aims to reduce the financial burden on OBC and EBC students who take loans for overseas studies. It promotes equal access to quality international education and encourages academic and professional growth among India’s backward communities.

Benefits

  • 100% interest subsidy during the course period and up to 1 year after completion (or 6 months after getting employment, whichever is earlier)
  • Subsidy is credited directly to the loan account
  • Applicable to loans taken from scheduled banks under the IBA model education loan scheme
  • Covers both undergraduate and postgraduate programs abroad

Eligibility

  • Belongs to OBC or EBC category with a valid certificate
  • Annual family income must not exceed Rs. 8 lakh per annum
  • Secured admission to a recognized overseas institution
  • Education loan must be taken from a scheduled commercial bank
  • Applicable for technical or professional programs at master’s level or above

Exclusions

  • Students from the general (unreserved) category
  • Family income above Rs. 8 lakh per annum
  • Loans from non-scheduled or unauthorized financial institutions
  • Courses not listed under approved disciplines or institutions
  • Applicants already receiving interest subsidy under another central scheme

Application Process

  1. Apply online through the National Scholarship Portal (scholarships.gov.in)
  2. Register with valid OBC/EBC certificate and income certificate
  3. Submit details of the bank loan and the foreign institution
  4. Bank verifies the application and forwards to the Ministry
  5. Subsidy is disbursed to the lending bank against the student’s loan account
