Overview
The Coconut Palm Insurance Scheme (CPIS) is a centrally sponsored scheme implemented by the Coconut Development Board (CDB) under the Ministry of Agriculture. It provides insurance coverage to coconut palm growers against losses due to natural calamities, pests, diseases, and other risks.
The scheme helps safeguard the income of coconut farmers who face unpredictable weather and biological threats.
Objective
The scheme aims to provide financial protection to coconut growers when their palms are damaged or destroyed. It ensures that farmers can recover and replant without suffering severe economic setbacks.
Benefits
- Insurance coverage for coconut palms against natural calamities like cyclones, floods, and droughts
- Coverage also for pest infestations and plant diseases
- Subsidized premium: farmers pay only a portion of the total premium
- Premium subsidy shared between central government, state government, and farmer
Eligibility
- Must be a coconut palm grower with palms registered with the Coconut Development Board
- Palms between 4 and 60 years of age are eligible for coverage
- Must be a resident of states where the scheme is implemented
- Individual farmers, cooperative members, and farmer groups can apply
Exclusions
- Palms outside the age bracket (below 4 years or above 60 years) are not insurable
- Losses due to wilful neglect or non-agricultural activities are excluded
- Farmers who are not registered with the CDB may not qualify
Application Process
- Contact your nearest Coconut Development Board office or CDB-empanelled insurance company
- Register your coconut palms and obtain an inspection
- Fill in the insurance enrollment form
- Pay the farmer’s share of the premium
- Receive the policy document confirming coverage
- In case of damage, inform the insurer and file a claim with supporting evidence
