Atal Pension Yojana: Pension Scheme for Unorganized Sector

Overview

Atal Pension Yojana (APY) is a government-backed pension scheme launched in 2015 for workers in the unorganized sector. It gives subscribers a fixed monthly pension ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000 after they turn 60, depending on their contribution amount.

The scheme is administered by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) and is available through banks and post offices.

Objective

The scheme aims to provide retirement income security to millions of workers in informal jobs who lack access to any formal pension system. It encourages the habit of saving for old age among low-income earners.

Benefits

  • Guaranteed monthly pension of Rs 1,000, 2,000, 3,000, 4,000, or 5,000 after age 60
  • In case of subscriber’s death, spouse receives the same pension
  • On death of both subscriber and spouse, the nominee receives the pension corpus
  • Government contributed 50% of the subscriber’s contribution or Rs 1,000 per year (whichever is lower) for eligible subscribers who joined before 2015-16

Eligibility

  • Must be a citizen of India
  • Age between 18 and 40 years at the time of enrollment
  • Must have a savings bank account
  • Must not be an income tax payer (for government co-contribution benefit)

Exclusions

  • Existing members of any statutory social security schemes like EPF or NPS are not eligible for government co-contribution
  • Income tax payers are excluded from the government co-contribution benefit
  • Individuals above 40 years of age cannot enroll

Application Process

  1. Visit your bank branch or post office where you hold a savings account
  2. Fill in the APY registration form with nominee details and pension amount preference
  3. Ensure your savings account has auto-debit facility enabled
  4. Submit the completed form to the bank
  5. The monthly contribution will be auto-debited from your account

Documents Required

  • Aadhaar card (mandatory for KYC)
  • Active savings bank account or post office savings account
  • Mobile number linked to Aadhaar
  • Nominee details (name, date of birth, relationship)
