The Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) is a maternity benefit scheme launched by the Government of India in 2017. It provides financial assistance to pregnant and lactating women, especially those from socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds, to support their health and nutrition needs during pregnancy and after childbirth.
Eligibility Criteria
To avail benefits under PMMVY, the applicant must:
- Be a pregnant or lactating woman aged 19 years or above.
- Be experiencing wage loss due to pregnancy.
- Apply for the first live birth.
- Not be employed in regular positions with the Central or State Government or Public Sector Undertakings, or receiving similar benefits under any existing law.
- Register the pregnancy at an Anganwadi Centre or approved health facility.
Additionally, women from the following categories are recognized as socially and economically disadvantaged and are eligible:
- Scheduled Castes (SC) or Scheduled Tribes (ST)
- Women who are partially (minimum 40%) or fully disabled (Divyang Jan)
- Women holding a BPL ration card
- Beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) of Ayushman Bharat
- Women with a valid e-Shram card
- Women farmers enrolled under the PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme
- Women possessing a MGNREGA job card
- Women with a total annual family income of less than Rs. 8 lakh
- Pregnant and lactating Anganwadi Workers (AWWs), Anganwadi Helpers (AWHs), and Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs)
- Women holding ration cards under the National Food Security Act (NFSA), 2013
- Any other category specified by the Central Government
Benefits Under PMMVY
The scheme provides financial assistance as follows:
For the First Child:
- First Installment: ₹3,000 upon registration of pregnancy and at least one antenatal check-up within six months from the last menstrual period.
- Second Installment: ₹2,000 after childbirth is registered and the child has received all due vaccines till the age of 14 weeks as per the Universal Immunization Programme.
Additionally, the beneficiary is entitled to receive a cash incentive under the Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) after institutional delivery, so that on average, a woman gets ₹6,000.
For the Second Child (if it is a girl):
- Single Installment: ₹6,000 after the birth of the girl child, provided the pregnancy is registered and the child has received all due vaccines till the age of 14 weeks.

To apply for PMMVY, the following documents are necessary:
- Identity Proof: Aadhaar card
- Bank Account Details: Bank passbook or account statement
- Pregnancy Proof: Mother and Child Protection (MCP) card
- Address Proof: Ration card, voter ID, or utility bills
How to Apply
Online:
- Visit the official PMMVY portal: https://pmmvy.wcd.gov.in/
- Click on ‘Citizen Login’ and enter your mobile number.
- Verify the OTP sent to your mobile.
- Fill in the application form with the required details and upload necessary documents.
- Submit the application.
Offline:
Visit the nearest Anganwadi Centre or approved health facility to collect and submit the application form along with the required documents.
