Universal Account Number (UAN)

The Universal Account Number (UAN) is like your passport to all things EPF (Employees’ Provident Fund). It helps you manage your PF account, check balance, transfer funds, and more—all in one place.

Let’s walk through the basics and how you can find, download, and transfer your UAN easily.

What is a UAN?

UAN is a 12-digit unique number assigned to every employee contributing to EPF. It stays the same throughout your career, even if you change jobs. Each time you join a new employer, a new Member ID (PF account) is linked to your UAN.

How to Find Your UAN

Option 1: From Your Employer

  • Your UAN is usually printed on your salary slip
  • Or, you can request your HR or payroll department

Option 2: Online Using PF Number or Aadhaar

  1. Go to https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/
  2. Click “Know your UAN” under Important Links
  3. Enter your PF number, Aadhaar, or PAN
  4. Enter your mobile number and verify with OTP
  5. Your UAN will be sent to your registered mobile via SMS

How to Download UAN Passbook

  1. Visit https://passbook.epfindia.gov.in/MemberPassBook/Login.jsp
  2. Log in with your UAN and password
  3. Select your Member ID from the list
  4. Click “View Passbook” to see or download a PDF

How to Transfer EPF to New Employer Using UAN

  1. Log in to EPFO Unified Portal
  2. Go to “Online Services” > “One Member – One EPF Account (Transfer Request)”
  3. Verify your personal and PF details
  4. Choose whether your old employer or current employer will verify the transfer
  5. Submit the request with OTP sent to your mobile
  6. Track your transfer status under “Track Claim Status”

📌 Note: Both employers must have digitally registered signatures (DSC) for quick approval.

Benefits of UAN

  • One ID for multiple PF accounts
  • Easy transfer when switching jobs
  • Online balance checks and statements
  • Quick withdrawal or partial claims
  • SMS alerts for PF deposits

Simple Example

Imagine your UAN is like your school roll number. Even if you change classes (jobs), your roll number (UAN) remains the same. All your report cards (PF accounts) are linked to this one ID.
