NREGA / MGNREGA

NREGA and MGNREGA refer to the same program. NREGA, which stands for National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, was renamed to MGNREGA, which stands for Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, in 2009. Both terms refer to the same Indian social welfare program aimed at guaranteeing the “right to work” for rural households. The scheme provides a legal guarantee of 100 days of wage employment per year to rural households.

The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) is a social welfare scheme launched by the Government of India in 2005. It guarantees at least 100 days of wage employment per financial year to every rural household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work. The primary objective is to enhance livelihood security in rural areas by providing employment opportunities and creating durable assets.
