Aadhaar Card for Children

An Aadhaar card is a special ID given by the Indian government to every person, including children—even newborn babies. It’s like a digital birth certificate that proves who your child is.

Getting an Aadhaar card for your child is important because it helps in school admissions, getting government benefits, and even opening a bank account in their name.

Why Aadhaar for Children is Important

  1. Identity Proof: It works as an official ID for your child.
  2. Easy Access to Services: Needed for mid-day meals, scholarships, and other government schemes.
  3. Useful in Future: When your child grows up, many services will ask for Aadhaar.

Who Can Apply?

Any parent or guardian can apply for Aadhaar for their child—even for babies just a few days old.

Documents Needed for Aadhaar for Children

For children under 5 years:

  • Birth certificate or hospital discharge slip
  • Aadhaar card of one parent

For children above 5 years:

  • Any school ID card or government-approved photo ID
  • Aadhaar of parent

Steps to Apply for Aadhaar for Your Child

  1. Book an Appointment
Visit the official UIDAI website https://uidai.gov.in or go to the nearest Aadhaar center.
  2. Visit Aadhaar Enrollment Center
Go to the center with your child and the required documents.
  3. Document Verification
The staff will check your documents. No fingerprint or iris scan is needed for kids under 5.
  4. Biometric Update Later

  5. Receive Aadhaar
Aadhaar card will be sent by post or can be downloaded online within 90 days.

Important Points to Remember

  • Aadhaar enrollment is free.
  • Updating your child’s Aadhaar with their photo and fingerprints at age 5 and 15 is mandatory.
  • For babies, Aadhaar is linked to the parent’s Aadhaar.

Real-Life Example

Let’s say Ravi’s daughter Meera is 2 years old. He takes her birth certificate and his own Aadhaar to the nearest enrollment center. In just a few minutes, Meera is enrolled for Aadhaar. A few weeks later, she receives her Aadhaar by post. Now she can be easily admitted to preschool and qualify for government benefits.
