What should I do if a broker does not resolve my complaint?
If the broker hasn’t resolved your complaint within their committed timeline, or the resolution offered is inadequate, you escalate to SEBI SCORES, the SEBI Complaints Redress System, which is the formal regulatory channel for investor grievances against SEBI-registered brokers and other market intermediaries. SCORES requires the broker to respond to the escalated complaint within a specific regulatory timeframe, and SEBI itself reviews unresolved or unsatisfactory responses. For a category of disputes, particularly those involving a specific monetary claim or dispute, SEBI’s Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) portal offers a further structured path through online conciliation and, if needed, arbitration, generally after the SCORES route has been attempted first. You keep all documentation from every stage, the original broker complaint, their response, and the SCORES escalation, organised together, since a well-documented escalation trail makes each subsequent step, including a potential ODR case, significantly stronger.
