What is the SEBI turnover fee?
SEBI charges a small regulatory fee on market turnover to fund its role as India’s securities regulator, and brokers collect it on SEBI’s behalf and pass it through in the contract note. It’s calculated as a tiny percentage of the transaction value, historically around ₹10 per crore of turnover, though the exact rate is set by SEBI and can be revised, so you don’t assume a fixed number without checking the current schedule. Unlike brokerage, this fee is identical across every SEBI-registered broker for the same trade value, since it’s not something a broker can discount or waive. You still include it when you total up trading costs, especially for frequent traders, since regulatory fees, transaction charges, and GST together can add up to a real amount even when each individual charge looks negligible.
