What is the SEBI Online Dispute Resolution platform?

SEBI’s Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) platform is a structured mechanism for resolving disputes between investors and SEBI-registered market participants, including brokers, through online conciliation and, if that doesn’t resolve it, arbitration, without needing to go through traditional, often slower, legal or regulatory channels. It was introduced to give investors a faster, more accessible route for resolving specific disputes, particularly those involving financial claims, complementing rather than replacing the SCORES complaint system, since ODR generally comes into play for disputes that need a more formal resolution process than a straightforward complaint. The process typically involves registering the dispute on the ODR portal, an initial conciliation attempt facilitated by an independent, empanelled conciliator, and if conciliation doesn’t resolve the matter, escalation to arbitration. You’d use ODR specifically for a substantive dispute, like a specific financial claim you believe the broker owes you, rather than for a general service complaint that’s more appropriately handled through the broker’s own grievance channel or SCORES first.
