What is a tax P&L report?

A tax P&L report, sometimes called a tax P&L statement, is a summary document most brokers generate specifically for income tax filing purposes, consolidating your realised profits and losses across a financial year, segregated by category: equity delivery (capital gains), equity intraday (speculative business income), and F&O (non-speculative business income), since each is taxed differently under Indian income tax rules. This is different from a general portfolio statement or the raw contract notes, since it’s specifically formatted and categorised to make tax filing easier, often including a breakdown of short-term versus long-term capital gains for delivery trades and turnover calculations relevant for F&O and intraday business income reporting. Most brokers make this available for download from the reports or statements section of the app or website, usually generated for the full financial year (April to March) once it’s complete, though many platforms let you generate it for a custom date range as well. You download and cross-check this report against your own trade records before filing your ITR, since it’s a starting point that still benefits from a sanity check, especially if you’ve traded across multiple brokers in the same year.
