What internet speed is required for online trading?
There’s no strict official minimum, but in practice, a stable connection with at least 2 to 5 Mbps is generally sufficient for smooth trading app performance, including live price updates and order placement, though a more reliable, low-latency connection matters more than raw speed for a smooth trading experience specifically. What matters just as much as headline speed is consistency: a connection that occasionally drops or spikes in latency can cause more practical problems (delayed order confirmations, stale price displays) than a slightly slower but rock-steady connection. For active intraday or F&O trading, where timing genuinely matters, you’d lean toward a wired or stable Wi-Fi connection over mobile data or a shared, congested network, specifically to minimise the risk of a connectivity hiccup at a critical moment like placing or exiting a position. You also keep a backup option in mind, like a secondary internet source or the broker’s phone-based dealing desk, for exactly the scenario where your primary connection fails while you have an open position.
