What causes a trading chart to freeze?

A frozen chart is usually a data feed or connectivity issue rather than the market itself pausing, and it commonly happens during periods of extremely high trading volume or volatility, like market open, a major news event, or a circuit-hitting move, when the sheer volume of tick data can occasionally overwhelm an app’s real-time rendering. It can also be caused by a weak or unstable internet connection on your end, an outdated app version with a rendering bug, or, less commonly, a broader technical issue on the broker’s data infrastructure affecting many users simultaneously. You first check whether other parts of the app, like the order book or LTP display elsewhere, are also showing stale data, since if only the chart is frozen while other live data is updating fine, it’s more likely a chart-specific rendering issue than a full connectivity problem. Refreshing the chart, switching timeframes and back, or restarting the app usually resolves a simple rendering freeze, while a persistent issue across multiple app sections points toward checking your internet connection or the broker’s status page for a known outage.
