What are pledge and unpledge charges?

These are fees some brokers charge for processing a pledge request (when you pledge shares as collateral for margin) and an unpledge request (when you later remove that pledge to free up the shares, typically before selling them). The charges are usually a small flat fee per instruction, sometimes per ISIN (essentially per stock) pledged or unpledged in a single request, rather than a percentage of the value involved. Not every broker charges for both actions; some waive pledge charges but charge for unpledge, or vice versa, so you check the specific tariff sheet rather than assuming symmetry between the two. Since you need to unpledge shares before you can sell them, this charge is a practical cost to factor in if you’re actively cycling shares in and out of pledge for short-term margin needs, rather than pledging a long-term holding you don’t plan to sell for a while.
