Can I open more than one demat account?
Yes, there’s no regulatory limit on the number of demat accounts an individual can hold, and many active investors do have more than one, often across different brokers for reasons like accessing different platform features, keeping long-term holdings separate from active trading, or comparing costs across brokers. Each demat account requires its own KYC-linked setup, though since KYC itself is centrally registered, opening additional accounts is usually faster than the first one. What’s worth knowing is that each account comes with its own set of charges (account maintenance charges, DP charges, etc.), so holding multiple accounts means potentially paying overlapping fixed costs across each one. You keep track of which holdings sit in which account, especially around tax reporting time, since capital gains statements are typically generated per account, not automatically consolidated across all of them.
