Can a closed demat account be reopened?

Generally, no, a fully closed demat account cannot simply be reactivated, since closure is treated as a formal termination of that specific account relationship with the depository participant. If you want to trade with the same broker again after closing your account, you’d typically need to open a fresh account, which usually goes faster than the first time since your KYC is already centrally registered and validated, but it’s still technically a new account with a new account number, not a reopening of the old one. This is different from a dormant or inactive account (one that hasn’t been formally closed but has had no activity for a while), which usually can be reactivated by completing a simpler reactivation process, sometimes just an updated KYC confirmation, without needing to open an entirely new account. You check whether your account is genuinely closed versus just inactive before assuming you need to start from scratch.
