The scheme provides a free, fast, and accessible grievance redressal mechanism for banking customers.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-the-banking-ombudsman\">What Is the Banking Ombudsman?<\/h2>\n<p>The Banking Ombudsman Scheme was established by RBI under the <a class=\"glossaryLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lemonn.co.in\/blog\/glossary\/banking-regulation-act\/\" data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]' tabindex=\"0\" role=\"link\">Banking Regulation Act<\/a>, 1949. In November 2021, it was replaced by the Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, which covers banks, NBFCs, payment system operators, and other RBI-regulated entities under a single framework.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"who-can-file-a-complaint\">Who Can File a Complaint?<\/h2>\n<p>Any individual, proprietary firm, or small business (turnover below Rs 50 crore) can file a complaint with the Banking Ombudsman after:<br>\n&ndash; Filing a complaint with the bank and not receiving a respo<a class=\"glossaryLink\"  href=\"https:\/\/lemonn.co.in\/blog\/glossary\/nse\/\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'  tabindex='0' role='link'>nse<\/a> within 30 days<br>\n&#x2013; Being unsatisfied with the bank&#x2019;s resolution<br>\n&#x2013; The complaint must be filed within one year of the bank&#x2019;s final reply<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-can-you-complain-about\">What Can You Complain About?<\/h2>\n<p>&#x2013; Non-payment or delay in payment of cheques, drafts, or funds transfers<br>\n&#x2013; Non-credit of proceeds from government schemes<br>\n&ndash; ATM\/d<a class=\"glossaryLink\"  href=\"https:\/\/lemonn.co.in\/blog\/glossary\/ebit\/\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'  tabindex='0' role='link'>ebit<\/a> card failures; internet banking errors<br>\n&#x2013; Unauthorised electronic fund transfers<br>\n&#x2013; Mis-selling of insurance or investment products through banks<br>\n&#x2013; Deficiencies in credit card services<br>\n&#x2013; Non-adherence to RBI instructions on interest rates, charges<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"process\">Process<\/h2>\n<p>1. Customer files complaint at the concerned bank and waits 30 days<br>\n2. If not resolved, complaint is filed with the Ombudsman (online at cms.rbi.org.in or by post)<br>\n3. The Ombudsman issues notices to both parties and tries to mediate<br>\n4. If no settlement, the Ombudsman passes an Award (binding on the bank if below Rs 20 lakh)<br>\n5. Customer can accept or reject the Award; if rejected, can go to civil court<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"practical-example\">Practical Example<\/h2>\n<p>Ravi&#x2019;s bank deducted Rs 15,000 from his account due to an unauthorised transaction. He complained to the bank, which did not respond within 30 days.
