It is the go-to option when you need to send money urgently and cannot wait for NEFT batches or RTGS minimum thresholds.

What is IMPS?

IMPS stands for Immediate Payment Service. It is operated by NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) and allows instant, 24×7 interbank fund transfers. Unlike NEFT (which works in hourly batches) and RTGS (which requires a minimum of Rs. 2 lakhs), IMPS transfers money in real time with no minimum amount and no time restrictions.

IMPS was launched in November 2010 and has become one of the most used payment systems in India for urgent transfers.

How IMPS Works

When you initiate an IMPS transfer:

1. Your bank receives the transfer request.
2. The request is routed through NPCI’s payment switch.
3. The recipient’s bank account is credited within seconds.
4. You receive a confirmation message and a unique transaction ID.

The entire process is real time and the recipient typically sees the credit within seconds to minutes.

IMPS Transaction Limits

– **Minimum Amount:** Re. 1 (no practical minimum).
– **Maximum Amount:** Rs. 5 lakhs per transaction (as per NPCI guidelines). Some banks may have lower limits; check with your bank.

IMPS Charges

IMPS charges are typically low and vary by bank:

– Up to Rs. 10,000: Rs. 2.5 to Rs. 5 per transaction.
– Rs. 10,001 to Rs. 1 lakh: Rs. 5 per transaction.
– Rs. 1 lakh to Rs. 2 lakhs: Rs. 10 to Rs. 15 per transaction.
– Rs. 2 lakhs to Rs. 5 lakhs: Rs. 20 to Rs. 25 per transaction.

Plus GST at 18%. Many banks have made IMPS free on mobile banking apps.

Ways to Initiate IMPS

IMPS can be initiated in multiple ways:

– **Using Account Number and IFSC Code:** Standard method on internet banking or mobile banking apps.
– **Using Mobile Number and MMID:** Mobile Money Identifier (MMID) is a 7-digit number linked to your mobile number and account. You can send money using just the recipient’s mobile number and MMID.
– **Using Aadhaar Number:** Some banks support IMPS transfers using the recipient’s Aadhaar number linked to their bank account.

IMPS vs UPI

UPI (Unified Payments Interface) has largely replaced IMPS for person-to-person transfers among mobile users, as UPI is more user-friendly and often completely free. However, IMPS remains relevant for:

– Transfers initiated from internet banking portals.
– Transfers to beneficiaries who have not set up UPI.
– Large transfers above UPI’s typical per-day limit.
– Business and corporate payments.

When to Use IMPS

Use IMPS when:
– You need to send money urgently outside banking hours (nights, weekends, holidays).
– The amount is below Rs. 2 lakhs (below RTGS minimum).
– The recipient does not have UPI set up.
– You need a transaction ID for record-keeping purposes.

Key Takeaways

– IMPS is a 24×7 real-time interbank payment system operated by NPCI.
– No minimum amount. Maximum Rs. 5 lakhs per transaction.
– Transfers are credited within seconds to minutes.
– Available via internet banking, mobile banking, and MMID-based transfers.
– Charges are low (Rs. 2.5 to Rs. 25) and many banks offer it free on mobile apps.
– UPI has replaced IMPS for most P2P transfers, but IMPS remains important for internet banking and larger transfers.

IMPS is a reliable and fast payment option for urgent transfers. Keep a note of the transaction ID after every IMPS payment as it is the primary reference for any dispute resolution.

IMPS (Immediate Payment Service) is India’s real-time interbank payment system that allows you to transfer money instantly, any time of the day or night, including Sundays and holidays.
