It is a funds transfer system where each transaction is settled individually (not in batches) and in real time. Once a RTGS transaction is processed, the money moves irrevocably and immediately to the recipient’s account.

RTGS is operated by the Reserve Bank of India and is designed specifically for large-value, time-critical transfers where immediate finality is required.

Key Features of RTGS

– **Real-Time Settlement:** Each transaction is processed individually as soon as it is received. No batching like NEFT.
– **Irrevocable:** Once settled, RTGS transfers cannot be reversed. The money is in the recipient’s account permanently.
– **Continuous Availability:** RTGS is available 24×7, 365 days a year (since December 2020).
– **Used by Banks and Customers:** RTGS is used both for interbank settlements and for customer-to-customer large-value transfers.

RTGS Transaction Limits

– **Minimum Amount:** Rs. 2 lakhs. RTGS cannot be used for transfers below Rs. 2 lakhs.
– **Maximum Amount:** No upper limit for RTGS. You can transfer any amount above Rs. 2 lakhs.

This makes RTGS the preferred system for:
– Home loan down payments.
– Business payments above Rs. 2 lakhs.
– Property registrations.
– Court-ordered payments.
– Large corporate fund transfers.

RTGS Charges

As per RBI guidelines, banks can charge for outward RTGS transactions:

– Rs. 2 lakhs to Rs. 5 lakhs: Up to Rs. 24.5 per transaction.
– Above Rs. 5 lakhs: Up to Rs. 49.5 per transaction.

Plus GST at 18%. Many banks have waived or significantly reduced RTGS charges for internet banking transactions.

Inward RTGS transactions (money received) are free of charge.

How to Initiate an RTGS Transfer

1. Log in to your bank’s internet banking or mobile banking.
2. Add the beneficiary with their account number and IFSC code.
3. Select RTGS as the transfer mode.
4. Enter the amount (minimum Rs. 2 lakhs).
5. Confirm and authorise the transfer.

At a bank branch, fill out the RTGS form with all beneficiary details and submit to the teller.

RTGS for Property Transactions

RTGS is frequently used for large property purchases where both parties need immediate, irrevocable confirmation of payment. Banks and property registrars often prefer RTGS acknowledgements as proof of payment due to its real-time, final nature.

RTGS vs NEFT vs IMPS

| Feature | RTGS | NEFT | IMPS |
|—|—|—|—|
| Minimum | Rs. 2 lakhs | None | None |
| Settlement | Immediate | Batch (hourly) | Immediate |
| Best for | Large amounts | Regular transfers | Urgent small/medium transfers |
| Charges | Slightly higher | Lower | Lowest |

Key Takeaways

– RTGS settles each transaction individually in real time, making it irrevocable.
– Minimum transfer amount: Rs. 2 lakhs. No maximum.
– Available 24×7 since December 2020.
– Charges: Up to Rs. 24.5 (Rs. 2-5 lakh) or Rs. 49.5 (above Rs. 5 lakh) per outward transaction, plus GST.
– Ideal for home loan payments, property transactions, and large business transfers.
– Inward RTGS transfers are always free.

For any transfer of Rs. 2 lakhs or above where immediate and irrevocable settlement is needed, RTGS is the most appropriate and reliable system to use.

RTGS (Real-Time Gross Settlement) is India’s premier electronic fund transfer system for large-value transactions.
